The Barn – Sydenham, Ontario
The Barn is a sacred space. Built in 1846, it carries the stories of centuries of animal life, the sun and the rain, and the communities that have used it and loved it along the way. The barn has been in the Huntly-Cooke family since 1989 and has been gently restored to become the primary home of The Groove Festival, among other celebrations. There are no adequate words to describe the quality of the light as it filters through the weathered barn boards; the sounds of creaking wood, roosting chickens, wind rushing through the surrounding hay fields and apple orchards. When you enter the barn you drop into a stillness that is immediately grounding–it’s a kind of plugging in to the natural world to which we belong. Travis, who has done much of the work restoring the barn, tells us that the beams in the barn came from the property itself and were seedlings in the 1600s. He said that if we protect the barn, it will stand for another 200 years, making it 600 year from seed to seed.
